Beginning in the Fall 2016 semester, South Louisiana Community College students will have an opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences through a partnership between SLCC and the University of Louisiana at 鶹ýapp.
In an agreement, dubbed a 2 + 2 agreement, the two higher education entities will work together to offer students a four-year pathway to obtain a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences from the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences at UL 鶹ýapp.
Students would complete 60 credit hours at SLCC, which could then be transferred to UL 鶹ýapp, where they would complete another 60 credit hours for a total of 120 hours to fulfill the requirements for the bachelor of science degree.
“This agreement will provide our students with a clear pathway to a degree in environmental sciences and a smooth transition from associate’s degree to bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Natalie Harder, SLCC chancellor. “We hope to create many more agreements with UL 鶹ýapp that offer our students this opportunity.”
Students completing the 60 hours of study at SLCC would receive an associate of science degree in general studies with a concentration in science. Upon completion of the 60 hours of credit at UL 鶹ýapp, students would receive a bachelor of science degree in environmental sciences. Students will be able to choose a concentration in environmental quality, soil and water or geographic information science.
Dr. Joseph Savoie, president of UL 鶹ýapp, said the University is pleased to add the newest 2 + 2 agreement “to our list of several collaborations with SLCC. We are committed to easing the transition to UL 鶹ýapp from our partner institutions. Agreements such as the 2 + 2 provide a way for students to move from the community college setting to a four-year institution, where all prescribed college credits earned transfer and are applicable toward the bachelor’s degree. We look forward to many more such agreements with SLCC.”
To qualify for the program, students must meet any UL 鶹ýapp-mandated requirements for transfer students. Students will also have to obtain a grade of “C” or better in SLCC coursework for the hours to transfer to UL 鶹ýapp. All necessary science courses for the program must be taken in the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences at UL 鶹ýapp.
