Library Exhibit Commemorates Acadian Dispersal

Edith Garland Dupre' Library at UL Â鶹´«Ã½app will be commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Acadian Dispersal with an exhibit that will take place through Dec. 31, 2005.

The exhibit focuses on the Acadian Dispersal from Nova Scotia in 1755. Display cases in the stairwell on the first floor and in the Louisiana Room on the third floor will have materials concerning life in Acadie before the dispersal, the dispersal and wanderings of the Acadians, and the Evangeline legend.

Information will be presented in both English and French on maps, pamphlets, books, newspaper clippings and manuscripts. A copy of a letter written in 1755 by John Winslow, the major general of the Massachusetts colonial militia in charge of deporting the Acadians, will also be on display. In addition, the exhibit includes materials from the 200th commemoration of the Acadian Dispersal and the Congres Mondial Acadien that was held in Louisiana in 1999.

The exhibit is free and open to the public during library hours.
